SSL Encryption
SSL means "Secure Sockets Layer" and is a worldwide standardized encryption protocol for secure data transmissions on the Internet. SSL encryption is usually used with HTTPS. SSL encrypts the Internet connection between an online shop and an Internet user.
Main components
The two main components TLS Handshake and TLS Record enable secure key exchange and authentication of the corresponding website. The negotiated symmetric key enables secure data transmission. This makes phishing attempts much more difficult, since all browsers now classify unprotected pages as insecure and issue warning messages.
The mode of operation
The connection to the server is established by the client. The X.509 certificate is verified and the server name is authenticated. An encrypted secret random number is generated, or the Diffie-Hellman key exchange is performed to authenticate the server. A cryptographic key is then derived from this. This key is then secured using a symmetric encryption method.
