Interface connection (hardware) that enables communication between different servers (computer systems) or data networks by means of software and programming and converts the data between the different network protocols.
In the early days of IP, there were a number of protocols such as IPX/SPX DECnet, SNA and Novells. The gateway had the task of converting these protocols for the respective network architecture. As the IP protocol slowly gained acceptance, gateways were increasingly replaced by routers. Nowadays, the IP protocol is used uniformly, so conversion is no longer necessary.
A public network is not entirely secure. However, a VPN gateway makes it possible to gain access to a remote network that is not publicly accessible via the Internet. Since the VPN gateway uses a tunneled connection, depending on the VPN protocol used, it can also be supplemented with encryption that is both tamper-proof and secure.
