Plug-in
A computer program (software application) that interacts with another program to perform a specific function. Typical examples are plug-ins that display special graphic formats and multimedia files, encrypt and decrypt e-mails or perform filter functions.
Programming interfaces (API)
Many software manufacturers define programming interfaces (API) for their programs to allow third parties to program extensions. Browser plugins are widely used, such as Java or PDF Reader. Many graphic, video and audio programs can be extended by plugins, e.g. by filter functions or audio and video effects.
