Online-Banking
With online banking, an account holder can carry out banking transactions such as transfers directly over the Internet without the need for a conventional transfer slip and view account information.
Online usage
Online banking or electronic banking, e-banking, home banking or electronic banking, is performed using PCs, smartphones or other electronic devices. Online banking is used to make transfers, collect transactions or configure accounts. The pioneer in this field was Postbank, which initially began using screen text in the 1980s. With the development of the Internet, online banking became increasingly popular.
Legitimation
The orders are signed with the help of an electronic signature. There are various procedures for this:

  • PIN/TAN (paper TAN list, TAN generator, eTAN, sm@rt TAN, chipTAN, optical TAN or mobile TAN e.g. via SMS).
  • Home Banking Computer Interface (HBCI) or Financial Transaction Services (FinTS). Legitimation by key diskette or chip card.
  • File Transfer and Access Management (FTAM) with Electronic Signature (EU); direct dial-up to the bank computer via ISDN or DATEX-P.
  • Banking Communication Standard (BCS), is mainly found in larger companies.
  • Electronic Banking Internet Communication Standard (EBICS): multi-bank standard for the corporate banking business using electronic signatures over the Internet.
