Subscription management
In the case of a subscription, an initial transaction is followed by a number of further payments that have to be processed accordingly. The control of these processes and any subsequent processes (reminders and collections) can be handled entirely by a payment provider.
Use of subscriptions
Subscriptions are sold almost exclusively for digital goods and serve the purpose of obtaining access to a specific service, such as an archive or an online newspaper, for a certain recurring period (e.g., monthly). One can offer both an unlimited and a limited subscription. A subscription cycle can be any period starting from one day (e.g., three days, one week, one month, one quarter). A trial period is a marketing tool to increase the attractiveness of the offer.
Available payment methods
In addition to credit card and direct debit, various other payment systems are also available for billing subscriptions. Each of these payment systems is characterized by special features in the process flow, so that the initial setup and management of subscriptions is a very complex process.
The payment provider takes over the cancellation of the subscription and the monitoring of the monthly incoming payments. In the case of early cancellations and also cancellations of unlimited subscriptions, the method of cancellation depends very much on the payment method. The spectrum ranges from a simple web interface to a cancellation that can only be made directly with the payment system operator.
