A payment gateway is a company or organization that acts as an interface between a merchant's point-of-sale system, an acquirer and an issuer system.
Some providers, such as CommDoo GmbH, offer payment gateways as white label services that allow e-commerce platforms, payment service providers, resellers or acquiring banks to pass off the payment gateway technology as their own. This has the advantage that all technology and compliance is in the hands of the payment service provider.
A payment gateway can perform several important tasks. Global payment processing, subscription management for managing subscriptions or memberships, micropayment for smaller amounts of money, and pay per use for telephone payment types.
