Log-in is the authentication of a person at a computer or in a protected area of the computer or on pages on the Internet. When logging in, the user usually has to enter a user ID and a password. If this combination is correct, the user is given access to an area that is authorised for him and his so-called session begins. He ends this session by logging out or logging in.
An unencrypted connection is insecure and cannot protect against unauthorized access, since the data is transmitted in plain text. It is generally not advisable to log on to such unsecured connections. The access data for the user account can be intercepted by keyloggers and phishing during the login process. Two-factor authentication via a secure connection is therefore required for online banking.
Biometric recognition methods are now becoming established in many areas. This no longer requires a password, but rather the user's physical characteristics, e.g., fingerprint, voice recognition, or the iris of the eye. The biometric feature data is stored in encrypted digital form and compared with the reference pattern during logon attempts. Access is granted if there is a close match.
