Term for a company or institution that provides access to the Internet and related services via its own subnetworks.
In principle, the Internet Service Provider is responsible for ensuring that IP packets can be forwarded to the corresponding Internet nodes (Internet connectivity). The size of the networks can be divided into the following categories. Tier-3 (local providers), Tier-2 (superregional networks) and Tier-1 (global Internet backbones). One of the key factors here is the line capacity (traffic) that can be made available.
Many Internet service providers also offer other services, such as domain hosting (registration of domains), server hosting (provision of applications and servers), web hosting (provision and operation of web servers), and mail hosting (provision of e-mail services). Server housing is another service spectrum and refers to the provision of servers with direct connectivity in a data center.
